The Coby Portable DVD Player – Junk or Genius?
I was in the market for a portable DVD player for traveling with my 2 kids. They can get pretty rowdy in the backseat without anything to do so I figured putting on some of their favorite shows would do the trick.
The 7 inch Coby portable DVD player first appealed to me because of the price – at $60 bucks I figured you can’t really go wrong. It’s definitely a budget unit…First saw it on Amazon and was one of their best selling portable DVD players so I ended up buying it after reading a few of the reviews.. Overall it’s a 4/5 star product so I figured I was making a good decision. Even thought some of the reviews are negative I think it was a case of you get what you pay for – this unit is probably not going to last you forever.
After having my kids play with it for a while I’ve pretty much come to conclusion that it’s a pretty cheap product.. but it works.
I think with these types of devices you really have to make sure you’re not handling it too rough, they are delicate and prone to breakage. I outfitted mine with one of those generic DVD player cases/covers and I think its doing a good job of protecting it from any damage that might come its way.
Unfortantely it doesn’t come with a plugin for the car which have been really handy for me because that’s mainly where we’ll be using the thing.
Overall I think Coby portable DVD players are a pretty good value for your money. Don’t expect huge quality from this unit because the price is nice and cheap.

“The idiots at work can’t seem to screw it up, it’s been dropped a few times, still works.
I use this thing for training videos on the job.
Very easy to operate, simple on/off switch, volume control wheel on the side, at first was a little worried that the screen might be too small to see the detail needed for safety/ training videos.
Not a problem. Very clear quality image, sound is crisp and clean.Ejecting mechanism works great, no issues like there were with earlier portables of this type.
I usually have a DVD in the unit, open the cover up and it starts up automatically, when the next guy comes in, just open it up and start again.
Some of my guys are techno idiots, some of the time I am convinced they can’t tie their shoes without their mommy’s help, they don’t need any help using this DVD player which is cool since I am not their mommy.
I am thinking of buying another one for home use,
I highly recommend you buy this product for your idiots, your kids or yourself.”

“I bought this DVD player for our trip to Florida. I have a 2 and 4 year old. I dont know what I would have done on the 3 hour flight without it!! They LOVED it!! and so did I.
The picture and sound were beyond what I would have thought of such a small player. The most important feature that I LOVED was the 4 hour battery life! I was not worried that 1/2 way into the flight the player would die. I have heard that others have much shorter battery lifes. Everyone told me to look at that when buying one of these players.
It was also lighter than I imagined it to be. Which is great for travel with small kids..you have enough ‘stuff’ to hall around. :0) It fit really nicely into our carry on bag.
I love the portability of this product. We are back from our trip and the girls still us it in there bedrooms.
The is an excellent product for the price!! I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a portable DVD player.

“We bought this dvd player for an overseas trip for my 4 year old son. I contemplated a more expensive player, but decided that it was not worth the extra money. We were very happy with our purchase. Picture quality is good. Battery life was good and better than friend’s reports of their more expensive dvd players. So far it seems pretty durable. It is so easy to operate, my 4 year old son was able to manage it on his own. It was perfect for toting around Europe. Kept my son entertained at crucial moments. I would definitely choose this dvd player again.”
